John Milton Woodbury and several other young men from the Union City area enlisted in a new unit that came to be Co. B of the 7th Indiana Cavalry. After completing training at Camp Morton in Indianapolis and awaiting movement to KY John Milton Woodbury deserted taking with him his Navy Colt pistol and his horse. After six months at liberty he was apprehended and imprisoned at Cairo, IL until the end of the war being carried on the 7th Indiana roster as absent to the end of its service. John Milton Woodbury
returned to his family in Randolph County, IN where he died unmarried in 1910.

Daniel served in the 7th Indiana Calvary during the Civil War until it was mustered out of service in 1866. After the end of hostilities the 7th Indiana was made part of a cavalry force under George Armstrong Custer for service at Austin, TX to protect the Texas/Mexican border and as a result was the last Indiana unit to be mustered out of Federal service. During the war the 7th Indiana Cavalry was stationed at White's Station outside Memphis, TN. It participated in several major battles in MS and MO including Iuka, Ivey's Farm and Brice's Crossroads in MS and West Port in MO and Grierson's Second Raid into MS and LA as well as a host of lesser actions. (West Port was the largest battle fought west of the Mississippi and featured a saber charge by the 7th Indiana.) After returning to Union City Daniel was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and his wife continued to host GAR gatherings after his death.

He left Mass, in July 1856 at age of 24 and located in Red Wing, Minn. After the Civil War he returned to Beverly, MA. in the fall of 1868. He arrived in Greeley on May 27 , 1870 and followed his occupation of builder and contractor. He was a member of the Town Council in 1873 and an alderman in 1886-7-8 and Mayor in 1890 & 1897-98. He lived at 1124 7th St. Greeley, Colo. in a house which he built and which is now on the Historic Register.

He wrote a autobiography in 1884, the manuscript is in the Greeley Historical Society records.
