PAUL SAMUEL WOODBURY

BANGOR - Paul S. Woodbury, 84, passed away peacefully Monday, April 15, 2002, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. He had resided for many years at the New Pine Haven Trailer Park on Stillwater Ave., Old Town and for the past year had been a resident at Fieldstone Manor in Brewer. A kindly and caring gentleman, Paul captivated all who knew him with his cheerful smile and ever-ready humor, gleaned from a lifetime of doing for others as he would have them do for him. He was born Jan. 1, 1918, at Nashua, N.H., a twin son of Clarence A. and Gladys Hodgdon Woodbury. As a youth, he sang in the choir of Pilgrim Church in Nashua and was a member of the Boy Scouts. He was a graduate of Nashua High School and attended Nichols Junior College. After college, he was employed for four years as a teller at the Indian Head National Bank in Nashua before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. As a technical sergeant, Paul was in charge of a radio-message center for the 289th Signal Corps, providing communications over vast areas for the 6th Army headquarters in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. In 19 months overseas, he served during the campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with bronze service arrowhead and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze service star. He was discharged from the service in 1945 and moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. For some 35 years, he worked for the Pinelles Lumber Company and the Cox Lumber Company, managing several branch yards for both firms. He retired in 1980. In St. Petersburg, he was a member of the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church and served as clerk of the session, sang in the choir and chaired its every member canvass. He was also a member of Clearwater Masonic Lodge 127. After moving to Bangor, Paul became a member of All Souls Congregational Church, where he served as a member of the Coordinating Committee and was very active in that group's participation in the soup kitchen servings at the Salvation Army. As a member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, he volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center. Paul was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Margaret Eleanor Brown Woodbury in 1990 and by his twin brother, William in 1997. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Anna Woodbury of Nashua, N.H., Alma Crowley of Moncton, N.B., Canada and Natalie Brown of Riverview, N.B., Canada; niece, Martha Woodbury Church, husband, Clifford and son, Christopher of Merrimac, N.H.; nephew, David Woodbury of Marysville, Wash.; niece, Judy Benjamin of Riverview, N.B., Canada; nephews, Wayne, David, Douglas and William Brown of New Brunswick, Canada. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, from All Souls Congregational Church, with the Rev. Dr. James Haddix officiating. Interment will be in the family lot of Edgewood Cemetery, Nashua, N.H. Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Foley Funeral Home, 299 Union St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul's name may be made to All Souls Congregational Church.

Harold was the author of two books of collected rhymes from the Arkansas Ozarks, one of which is in the Houston Public Library. Harold also wrote a column for the Houston Chronicle for several years.

Chester was a Master Sgt. in the U.S. Army. He was attached to the Royal Flying Corps. WWI, 20th Aero Squadron, First Day Bombardment Group. One of the founders of Ft. Smith Aircraft Corp. in the 1920's. One of the original employees of the Civil Aeronautics Authority, forerunner of the FAA. He was also an Airways Inspector until the mid 1960's, having his own pilots and mechanics license. He was a member of the Mason's, and also the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

NAPLES, Fla. - George S. Woodbury, 77, also of Turner St., Auburn, died Tuesday in Naples.

He was born in Lewiston, Maine, a son of Samuel S. and Verna Hayes Woodbury, attended school in Auburn, Maine, and was a graduate of Edward Little High School there.

Mr. Woodbury served with the Army during World War II.

He married Julia Wallingford on Nov 18, 1944. She died Dec. 10, 1978.

Mr Woodbury was the former president of Lewiston-Auburn United Grocers, a member of High Street Congregational Church in Auburn, and a member of Tranquil Masonic Lodge of Auburn, which he served as master in 1964. He also served on the Shrine Circus Committee.

A member of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club, and The Robin Dow and First Auburn Senior Citizens.

A son, William Woodbury, died Oct. 10, 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie Camilleri of Hilton Head, S.C.; two sons, Thomas of Basking Ridge, N.J., and David of Scarborough, Maine; a sister, Mary Hamilton of Temecula, Calif.; a brother, Richard of Auburn; and three grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at High Street Congregational Church, Auburn. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. Arrangements are by The Fortin Group, Plummer and Merrill Funeral Home, Auburn.

George married Julia Wallingford on 18 Nov 1944. Julia Wallingford died on 10 Dec 1978.

RODNEY M. AUSTIN

Rodney M. Austin, 79, died March 13 at Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton after a brief illness.

He was born in Lewiston, a son of Kenneth and Elizabeth Woodbury Austin. He attended Mechanic Falls schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High Schools in 1932 and Bliss Bisiness College, Lewiston, in 1934.

He married Julia B. Burnell on Sept. 10, 1937.

During World War II, he was employed at Bath Box Co. making special containers for the government.

Mr. Austin was an instructor at Pineland Training Center and was a custodian at Lake Region High School in Naples. After his retirement in 1979, he assisted in the maintenance work at the Bridgton Post Office.

He was a 50-year member of Oriental Masonic Lodge and enjoyed gardening and farming.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Ann A. Macdonald and Linda L. LeBlanc, all of Bridgton; four grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital or to the North Bridgton Community Church, No. Bridgton, ME. 04057.

Rodney married Julia Maria Burnell, daughter of Frank Burnell and Ethel Chadbourne, on 10 Sep 1937.

GRAY--Kermit N. Austin, 74 of 140 Yarmouth Road, A longtime Maine Department of Transportation supervisor, died Sunday in a Lewiston Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Mechanic Falls, a son of Kenneth and Elizabeth Woodbury Austin, and attended Mechanic Falls schools. He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and Bridgton Academy.

Mr Austin was employed for 34 years as a supervisor for the Maine Department of Transportation, retiring in 1973.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yarmouth.

Besides his wife of 47 years, Cecelia (Liberty) Austin of Gray, he leaves two sons, Ernest M. of Gray and Linwood N. of Yarmouth; a brother, Rodney Austin of Bridgton; and four grandchildren.

Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m., Wednesday at the Lindquist Funeral Home, 37 Portland St., Yarmouth, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yarmouth.

Kermit married Cecelia Lisa Liberty, daughter of Frederick Simon Laliberte and Marie Fortier. Cecelia was born on 30 Jun 1918 in Lewiston, Androscoggin, ME.
