5. Humphrey Woodbury (John Jr.2), (John1) was born in 1597 in Somersetshire, England and died in 1686 in Beverly, Essex, MA.

On 2 Jan 1635/36, Humphrey and six others were granted one half acre each at Winter Harbor for fishing trade and building. In 1636 he received a grant of Forty acres and on 29 Jan 1637 he received a second 40 acre grant. He purchased a dwelling house, barn, and twenty acres of land in Beverly from Guido Bayley of Beverly on 10 Oct 1652. He bought ten acres from Susanna Hollingworth of Salem on the Cape Ann side on 2 Dec 1667. (Might this have been his sister who married Richard Hollingsworth?)

(Suffolk Co. Court House files, (vol. 11, fols. 37, 38, 43 & 44, for 1685-86) - Will Dated 4 Mar 1685; proved 11 Oct 1686.)

Humphrey married Elizabeth Dudley on 11 Apr 1638. Elizabeth was born in 1617 in England and died on 1 May 1689 in Beverly, Essex, MA.

Peeter, s. Humphry and Elizabeth, 28: 1 m. 1652. CT.R. Salem V.R. (Pg. #441).

Peter Was killed in service under Capt Lothrop, Sept. 18, 1675, at Muddy Brook (Also Called Bloody Brook), which is near Deerfield, MA during "King Philips War". See: Book #38, Pg. #335 N.E.H.G. Register.

Philip of Poconoket, King Philip, the second son of the Wampanoag chief, became the leader of the Wampanoags on Massasoit's death in 1661. In an attempt to stem the settler's push into Indian territory, Philip organized nearly all New England tribes in a confederation of resistance. An estimated 3,000 Indians and 600 settlers lost their lives in Indian and colonial militia raids and massacres; the bloodiest era in pre-revolutionary America.

By July of 1675 Philip had powder and ball firearms and began attacking the river settlements of Northfield, Deerfield, and Hadley. Captain Beers men were ambushed near Northfield and half his number were killed. Three survivors were burned at the stake. "The saddest day that ever befel New England" was the massacre at Bloody brook where 100 soldiers and about 20 Ox cart drivers were killed.

In an effort to get the Mohawks involved in the crusade, Philip had a few of their numbers killed and tried to blame it on the settlers. One of the victims survived and told the story of Philip's duplicity. After that Philip was being fought on two fronts, by the settlers and by the Mohawks. Philips braves began to desert.

On August 11, 1676, the last remnants of the Hadley Indians crossed the Connecticut River on rafts at a point a little above the present Holyoke dam. The Norwottucks and Nonotucks had been driven from their land permanently.

From Genealogical Gleaning in England":

"John Woodbury of Beverly in New England, mariner, but now resident on his Majesty's Ship "Crown" Aug. 4, 1672, for the remainder of the moneys, it is my will that my wife Elizabeth Woodbury shall have and enjoy, and be sent to her by the first opportunity into New England. I give and bequeath to my said wife, all books and sea instruments which I have now in my chest, and also a cloth coat, which by my will, may also be sent to my wife by the first conveyance."

In April of 1670, John mortgaged land which was presumably a part of his father's estate. From the "Old Planters of Beverly..." by Alice Lapham; pg. 50.

'Indenture...betweene John Woodbery of Salem in New England, marrenor, of the onr pt & John Williams of the citty of Bristoll, march't, of ye other pt witnesseth: that the said John Woodbery, for...ye sume of Sixty pounds eighteene shillings...hath sett over unto ye said John Williams...all ye piece or p'cell of land or wood ground, containing by estimation forty acres...scittuat...neere Basse river...and adjoineth to certaine lands & Heridittaments of Benjamin Balch of Salem husbandman on the east side & certaine other lands in ye possession & occupation of Henry Herricke on the west side...from the date hearof for & dureing the full time & terme of one thousand yeares...paying therefore...the yearly rent of one penny, at the feast of St Michaell the Arch Angell...p'vided...that the said John Woodbery doe pay or cause to be paid unto the said John Williams the full sume of sixty four pounds ten shillings at or upon the first day of Maye which shal be in ye yeare of our Lord God one thousand Six hundred seaventy & one, at the comon place of audience, caled the Tolsey of Bristoll, scittuat in Corne Street...according to ye condicon of one obligation bearing even date with these pr'sents, wherein he ye said John Woodbery is become bound to ye said John Williams, in ye penal sume of one hundred & twenty pounds...'

Peter had a good education if his handwriting may be considered as evidence. With his second wife, Sarah, he was received as a full member of the Beverly Church. Peter was selectman in 1675 and 76. On Nov. 16, 1686 he was elected Deacon. It was during his incumbency in this office that the witchcraft delusion swept over Salem and it is related of him that he kept his horses saddled to assist the persecuted to flee to New Hampshire out of the jurisdiction of the court. Peter lived on the family homestead that remained in the family until 1898.

Knowing that Ann Paulgrave died in 1701 as seen above in the Vital Record we can conclude she is indeed Ann daughter of Richard and Joan Harris.
