The following is an excerpt from John Boyd Woodbury's Journal

The entire Journal or what is extant of the Journal may be found on pp 288-316 of Lester I. Millers book "Seven Generations and Two Centuries Across America"

"My father was born in the town of Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts, if I mistake not, on the 28th of November 1759 A.D. His father's name was Robert Woodbury and his mother's maiden name was Hannah Williams. They were of English Parentage".

"My father's name was Nathan Woodbury. He followed the seas until he was thirty-six years of age. He was all through that long bloody struggle that gave to America her independence. For his services he received a pension of $66.66 per annum from General Jackson's administration until the day of his death".

"When he quit the seas, he came into the state of Pennsylvania, Washington County, where he married my mother. Her name was Elizabeth Boyd. She was born in York County, State of Pennsylvania, if I mistake not, on the 20th day of May. Her father's name was Dugal Boyd and his mother's name was Patty Best. They were of Irish Parentage".

"My father was married about the year 1790 and about the year 1798 he moved to the State of Ohio. The following year he moved onto his land obtained from the Ohio Company's purchase from the government, now Athens County, where he lived and died".

"They raised six children, three boys and three girls, and they buried three children, two boys and one girl. The eldest that lived was a girl named Patty (born 1795) who married John Straight. The second was a boy named William who was born in 1799. He married a girl named Margaret Straight. The third child was a bot named Nathan who was born in 1800. He married Susan Linnings. Fourth, in 1802, was a girl named Elizabeth. She married William Allen. Elizabeth died leaving five children, three boys and two girls".

"The fifth child of Nathan and Elizabeth Woodbury was a girl named Nancy, born in 1804. She married William Protsman".

"I was the sixth and last child. I was born on the 12th day of October in 1806 and was married to Nancy Johnson in 1832".

Nancy married Lindsey Staley in 1866. Lindsey was born on 9 Jul 1844 and died on 22 Oct 1919.

Lindsey fought in the Kansas Militia during the Civil War. The Staley were close friends of Levi and Martha (Woodbury) Miller. Lindsey and Nancy (Woodbury) Staley moved to Kansas about the same time as Levi and Martha (Woodbury) Miller. They lived in Spring Creek Twp., KS. as did the Miller's. I think Nancy is buried close to the grave of John Boyd Woodbury in what was once called the Gillispie place. The graves have not been seen in many years. I think some of the Staley's moved to Oklahoma.

He was Professor of English at the University of Nebraska (1877-78, 1880-82), Professor of comparative literature at Columbia University (1891-1904). In 1904 he became lecturer in English literature at Amherst College, and in 1908 Professor of English literature at Cornell University.

WOODBERRY, George Edward, author, was born in Beverly, Mass, on May 12, 1855. He is descended from a family settled in New England for many generations. He attended Phillip's Exeter Academy and entered Harvard College in 1872. Ill health compelled him for a time to relinquish his studies, but he re-entered college in 1875 and was graduated in 1877 taking highest final honors in philosophy. His commencement essay "Relation of Phallas Athene to Athens: was later published in book form. In 1877 and 1878 he filled the chair of English and History in the University of Nebraska. In the latter part of 1878 he took up his residence in New York and became on of the editors of the "Nation." In 1879 he removed to Cambridge, Mass., continuing his work for the "Nation" and contributing also to "Harper's Magazine" and the "Atlantic Monthly." From 1880 to 1882 he was again professor of English in the University of Nebraska. In 1882 he published a "History of Wood Engraving" which has become an authority upon the subject with which it deals. The following two years he spent in Beverly devoting his entire time to literary work. "The North Shore Watch; a Threnody" was published in 1883, and in 1884 he contributed to the American men of letters series a Life of Edgar Allen Poe that at once attracted notice by its proofs of close and careful research and its evidence of fine and sound discrimination. In 1885 and again in 1889 he visited Italy. In 1888 he was the literary editor of the Boston "Post." In 1890 he published "The North Shore Watch and Other Poems" and "Studies in Letters and Life" collection of essays. His verse is filled with a deep and tranquil charm and his critical essays revealed a sound, healthy, penetrating and widely informed intellect. See also "Geo. E.
